/ What a power flush involves
Over the years the water in a central heating system picks up iron oxide from the radiators and scale from the mains. It settles as a black sludge in the bottom of radiators and the boiler's heat exchanger, blocking flow, creating cold spots and putting strain on the pump. A power flush pushes a high-flow cleaning solution through every radiator and the boiler until the water runs clear, then refills the system with inhibitor to stop it coming back.
It's worth doing when you have persistent cold spots or noisy radiators, when the boiler is overheating or cutting out, and always before a new boiler goes onto an old system — most manufacturers require a clean system for the warranty to stand.
We flush every radiator individually rather than just the loop, fit or clean a magnetic filter, balance the system afterwards and give you a written report. If radiators are corroded beyond saving we'll tell you before we start.

How do I know if I need a power flush?
Radiators cold at the bottom but warm at the top, radiators that take a long time to heat, banging or kettling noises from the boiler, and black water when you bleed a radiator are the usual signs.
How long does it take?
Usually half a day for a typical house; larger systems or badly sludged ones can take a full day.
Is a power flush needed with a new boiler?
In most cases yes. Fitting a new boiler to a dirty system risks blocking the new heat exchanger, and most manufacturers require a clean system for the warranty.
Can a power flush damage old radiators?
The process itself is gentle on sound radiators. Very corroded radiators can start to weep once the sludge sealing them is removed — we inspect first and tell you if any look at risk.
